Donald Skinner

Mr. Donald R. Skinner, 84, a resident of Elkins, passed away Friday morning, Feb. 14, 2014, in Colonial Place.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. On Thursday, Feb. 20, Mr. Skinner will be moved to First United Methodist Church in Elkins where a funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. the Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley and the Rev. Dallas Forren will officiate, and interment will follow in Elkins Memorial Gardens, Country Club Road in Elkins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 315 Kerens Ave., Elkins, WV 26241, in memory of Mr. Skinner. Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Donald R. Skinner. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.tomblynfuneralhome.com.

Mr. Donald R. Skinner, 84, a resident of Elkins, passed away Friday morning, Feb. 14, 2014, in Colonial Place.

He was born Feb. 27, 1929, at Orlando, a son of the late Newlon Jennings Skinner and Flossie Etta Wilmoth Skinner.

On March 1, 1951, he was married to Twila Wheeler Skinner, who preceded him in death March 1, 2009.

He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Skinner Geisel and husband, Phillip, of Verona, Va., and Beverly Dawn Skinner of Bridgewater, Va.; two sons, Kenneth R. Skinner and wife, Joy, of Bridgeport and Gary L. Skinner and wife, Dee Dee, of Elkins; one sister, Barbara Morgan and husband, Max, of Elkins; and two brothers, Robert “Bob” Skinner and wife, Mary, of Elkins and Jennings “Jim” Skinner and wife, Evelyn, of Elkins. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Dara McCarthy and husband, Richard, of Boynton Beach, Fla., Sturn Tusing of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Cody Skinner of Elkins; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Alexa McCarthy of Boynton Beach, Fla.; stepgrandchildren, Brian Bibey and wife, Julie, of Belington, Rochelle Carpenter and husband, Jaime, of Belington and Heather Albrant and Amber Click of Bowden; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Paige and Gage Bibey, Cori, Maddi, McKensie, Averi and Finley Carpenter. all of Belington and Grayson Click of Bowden. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Also preceding him in death was one brother, William “Joe” Skinner.

Don was a staff sergeant with the United States Army Signal Corps where he served during the Korean Conflict and was also in the Army National Guard in Elkins. He had worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. until being drafted into the United States Army. Following his military service, he then worked for the Western Maryland Railroad as an agent operator and later retired from Columbia Gas as area accounting supervisor for 25 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion, the Elks Club and was a life member and Distinguished Past President of the Elkins Kiwanis Club. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels with the Randolph County Senior Center for several years and was awarded “Boss of the Year” by the Elkins Business and Professional Women’s Club in 1971. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the administrative board for several years and was a member of the Methodist Men’s Group. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
