Elizabeth Snyder ‘Liz’ Tinney
Elizabeth Snyder “Liz” Tinney, age 87 years, a well-known retired educator and a resident of Valley Bend, departed this life late Friday evening, Dec. 30, 2016, at her home surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Mountain Hospice.
She was a life-long resident of Randolph County, being born Friday, Nov. 22, 1929, at Huttonsville, the second daughter of the late V.B. and Geneva Simmons Snyder. She was married to Charles W. “Chuck” Tinney, who preceded her in death Aug. 20, 2002. They had celebrated 54 years of marriage. Surviving are four daughters, Carol Tinney Forester of Lexington, Kentucky, Mary Louise Tinney of San Francisco, California, Sarah Beth “Betsy” Tinney and husband Marc of Champaign, Illinois, and Ann Margaret Watson Vance and husband Bill of Morgantown; four grandchildren, Brett David Czajkowski and wife Erin, Regan Elizabeth Forester, Kathleen Chelsea Watson and Charles Matthew Watson; two great grandsons, Ethan and Ian Czajkowski; and a nephew, Earl Snyder and wife Sue.
Preceding her in death is one sister, Amy Louise.
She was a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School, attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and later graduated from Davis & Elkins College, magna cum laude, with majors in education and chemistry and minors in religion, philosophy and English. Mrs. Tinney taught in the Randolph County Schools for 39 years retiring in 1999.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elkins where she had served in the music ministry for many years. In addition, she is a past president of the Davis Medical Center Auxiliary, a member of the Elkins Woman’s Club, the Randolph Chapter No. 74, Order of the Eastern Star, the John Hart Chapter — Daughters of the American Revolution and the Randolph County Retired Teachers Association. As a volunteer youth leader for Explorer Scouts, she particularly enjoyed cave exploration and rappelling.
The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church, 412 Randolph Ave., Elkins WV from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday. Final Rites will be conducted at the church, Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Linda Roberts and Pastor L. Scott Hamby will officiate and interment will follow at the American Legions Little Arlington Cemetery at Cravensdale. The family suggests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the First Baptist Church, 412 Randolph Avenue, Elkins, WV 26241 or to Mountain Hospice, 1002 South Crim Avenue, Belington, WV 26250.
