Mr. Junior Lee Ervin, 97, a longtime resident of Belington, departed this life Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020, in the comforts of his daughter Donna Sinsel’s home near Belington following a period of declining health.

He was born June 20, 1922, at Belington, a son of the late Charley E. and Maple Gay Jones Ervin.

On June 18, 1949, he was united in marriage to the former Louvena Mae Phillips, who preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 2002.

He is survived by three children; David E. Ervin and wife Janet of Philippi, Donna Sinsel of Belington, and Susan Gum and husband “Speed” of Elkins. Additional survivors include four grandchildren; Eric Isner of Belington, Kendra High and husband Nathan of Hedgesville, Erin Fincham and husband Mike of Belington, and Lauren “Stacy” Defibaugh and husband Christopher of Mill Creek, six great grandchildren; Adera and Zayah High, Preslee and Parker Fincham, and Zayden and Emersyn Defibaugh.

Junior was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother; Charles Eugene Ervin, one sister; Mary E. Payne, and a son-in-law; Doug Sinsel.

Junior was a graduate of the Belington High School with the class of 1943 and was a long-time member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Belington where he sang in the choir for many years. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II and was in the 510 AAA Gun Battalion; receiving the Non-Combat Medal of Bravery. He retired from CSX Railway formerly known as B & O and Chessie System Railways where he was the assistant forman of the Tunnel Department. In his retirement years, he was a host on the Tygart Flyer with The Greenbrier Railroad. Mr. Ervin was one of the founding members of the American Legion Post 96 of Belington where his membership spanned over a period of 75 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Laurel Mountain Post 410 in Belington. Junior was a wonderful man, husband, father, son and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Friends will be received from the Talbott Funeral Home, 56 N. Brandenburg St. in Belington on Monday, Jan. 6, from 6 – 9 p.m. and again on Tuesday at noon, the funeral hour, when final rites will be conducted from the funeral home chapel with Pastor Bryan Headley officiating. Interment will follow in the Fraternal Cemetery near Belington where full military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 96 of Belington and the United States Army.
