Sandra McQuain Simmons
Sandra Jo McQuain Simmons, 77, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 11, 2020, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Mountain Hospice.
She was born Wednesday, May 6, 1942, at Elkins, a daughter of the late Irons David and Wahna Crystal Sears McQuain.
She attended the schools at Elkins and graduated from the Davis Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1964. She was a registered nurse and had a passion for helping others. She worked at Saint Mary’s Hospital at Clarksburg, Nella’s Inc. and the Elkins Convalescent Hospital, where she served as a nursing supervisor. Sandra was a caregiver and friend to many.
On April 25, 1964, she was married to William Edward “Bill” Simmons Sr., who survives. They would have celebrated 56 years of marriage in April.
Also surviving are two sons, William Edward “Ed” Simmons II and wife, Andrea, of Glady, Brian Keith Simmons and wife, Julia, of Elkins; two sisters, Maria McQuain Pingley and husband, Charles “Jake,” and Johanna Daveanna McQuain, all of Elkins; one brother-in-law, Thomas Simmons and wife, Bunny; nephew, Thomas Simmons and wife, Amy; and great niece, Willow, all of Montrose; three nieces, Vanessa Carr and husband, Leroy, and son, Nicholas, of Elkins; nephew, Jeffrey Thomas McGlaughlin of North Carolina; niece Christine “Booty” Hedrick and husband Glen of Norton; and several nieces and nephews.
Also left to cherish her memory are several grandchildren whom she dearly loved, Erika Poling of Fairmont, Dillon Chambers of Glady, Garrett Simmons and wife Rachel of Morgantown, Laura Simmons of Morgantown, and Caroline Simmons of Elkins; and her beloved dog “Loki.”
Sandra had many lifelong friends that she kept in touch with over the years to include high school friend, Thomas Mero.
She and the family would like to thank the longtime neighbors of the Glenmore community who were always helpful and there in the time of need for Sandra and Bill.
Preceding her in death are her parents, her father-in-law, Herbert Giles Simmons; two brothers-in-law, Charles Dorsey Simmons, and Lawrence “Butch” Simmons; one daughter-in-law, Lisa Simmons; and one nephew, David Bruce McGlaughlin.
The family wishes to extend a special gratitude of thanks to the caregivers of Mountain Hospice. All of them took pride in providing wonderful care to Sandra and allowed her to leave this world with dignity and grace.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Final Rites will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday, Feb. 16, at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Danny Franke will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.
