Mathew ‘Mat’ Thornton Earnest
Mathew “Mat” Thornton Earnest, 88, a resident of Elkins, passed from this life Sunday, July 26, 2020, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
Mat was born Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020, in Johnson City, Tennessee, a son of the late Charles Dayton Earnest and Laura Gayley Earnest.
Left to cherish his memory is one brother, Wallace Earnest and wife Paula of Parkersburg, two nieces, Gwendolyn Diaz and Alicia James, his loving companion and life saver of 24 years, Helena Schutz of Elkins, and his second family, Diana McCauley and husband Jerry, Chad and Wes McCauley, John Fincham, Patricia Schutz, Johnathon, Christopher, and Lasama Schutz-Fincham, special friends, Telford Woods and Arizona Pingley.
Mat served in the United States Air Force and was a Korean war veteran. He was a member of the Elkins Highlanders, and he was Methodist by faith.
A visitation will be held at the Randolph Funeral Home Wednesday, July 29, from 5 until 6 p.m., the funeral hour. The Rev. Dr. Basil A. Hensley will officiate. Mat’s request for cremation will then be honored.
