Tommy Roger Smith


Tommy Roger Smith, 70, a resident of the Bretz community where he resided with his longtime friend and landlord, Leona George, passed from this life July 24, 2020 at UPMC Altoona, Pennsylvania, with his family by his side.

Tom was born Sunday, June 25, 1950, in Dailey, a son of the late Charles Ernest Smith and the late Charolette Ellen Varner Smith.

Tom is survived by four brothers: Junior Smith of Elkins, Billy Smith of Salem, James “Jessie” Smith of Parsons and Paul Smith and wife Tammy of Parsons; two sisters: Gale Huffman of Altoona, Pennsylvania, and Patty Smith of Parsons; a sister-in-law Sandra “Susie” Smith of Oakland, Maryland; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death besides his parents were four siblings: Jimmy Smith, Donnie Smith, Sandra Smith, and Margaret Parsons and her husband Howard Parsons.

Tom grew up in Thomas and later moved to Hambleton. He was a dedicated employee. He worked for Kingsford Manufacturing Co., Hinchcliff Products Co. and many years at Sunrise Sanitation. Tom was a big fan of Western shows and movies and enjoyed eating fireballs and Brach’s maple nut candy. Tom had a big heart and loved spending time with his friends and family. Tom’s family will be forever grateful to Leona George, known as Mrs. George to Tom. When she became his landlord, she went above and beyond the call of duty and took Tom into her home and looked after him as a son for nearly 40 years.

Tom’s request for cremation was honored. A graveside service will be held on Aug. 16, at 3 p.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Thomas.
