Martha Lee (Bland) Hedrick Brotemarkle

BROTEMARKLE

Martha Lee (Bland) Hedrick Brotemarkle, 85, peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2021.

Born April 9, 1935, in Monkey Town, Riverton, West Virginia, to Ernst and Kate Bland.

Martha married James Donald Brotemarkle on July 30, 1966, in Riverton, West Virgina. They celebrated 50 years together with a surprise party in 2016.

Martha worked at Hedrick’s 4-U Restaurant before moving to Ohio from West Virginia. She then worked at Conley’s Department Store in Chardon, Ohio, from 1966 to their closing in 1991.

“One of the Conley’s Girls,” she was the last one to close the door at Conley’s. She went to work at Rite Aid in 1991 and retired from there in 2015. Everywhere she worked she was always entrusted as the “Keeper of the Key” and called to work any and all hours. If they did not call her, she would call them.

Martha liked working and working with people. She loved to have and plan parties. She had parties for everyone and everything! Many held in their barn, with some square dancing and “camp” pies. Her favorite hobby was gardening and waiting anxiously for her green beans to come in so she could string and can. Her favorite dessert was carrot cake and Rice Krispie treats and brought them to every family dinner.

They made many trips to West Virginia to spend weekends and time with family and friends. Everyone came to the “homeplace,” so many good times to remember.

She is survived by her husband, James D. Brotemarkle of Hambden Township, Ohio; sons, Harold (Mary) Hedrick and Jeffery (Denise) Hedrick; grandchildren, Sharon K. Palmer, Jamie M. Thobe, Katie G. (Kurt) Ragle, Amanda R. (Kaya Gezlev) Hedrick; great grandchildren, Allison and Zachary Thobe, Jase Palmer and Jocelyn and Evan Ragle; two step grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren siblings, Frances (Ernest) Bergdoll, Jerry (Tammy) Bland and Patsy (Carl) Armentrout; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Harmon H. Hedrick, whom she was married to from 1953 to 1962; sons, Anthony and David H. Hedrick; brother, Ernest “Bud” (Gwen) Bland Jr.; grandson, David Ryan Hedrick; niece, Crystal Bergdoll; and nephew, Vincent Bland.

Mrs. Bland’s family will receive friends on Saturday, April 10, 2021, from 10 a.m. until noon at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, West Virginia. Funeral services will follow at noon in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be in North Fork Memorial Cemetery, Riverton, West Virginia.
