Earl F. ‘Joe’ Woods


Earl F. “Joe” Woods, 69, a resident of the Poe Run Community, Elkins, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2022, at his home of an apparent heart attack.

He was born Jan. 13, 1952, in Elkins, a son of the late Elmer Woods and the late Agnes Irene Paugh Woods Foy.

On June 6, 1980, in Elkins, he was married to the former Frances Thompson, who survives.

Also surviving is one son, Bradley Woods and wife, Jennifer, of Mill Creek; seven grandchildren; mother-in-law, Nellie Thompson of Sully, West Virginia; brothers-in-law, Doug and Marg Thompson of Sully, Don and Pat Thompson of Alpena, Lanny and Kim Thompson of Alpena; and a sister-in-law, Carole Woods of Keyser, West Virginia. One niece, Kathy Messenger of Sully; nephews, D.J. and Melissa Thompson of Sully, Cody Thompson of Elkins, Jerry Keller of Elkins, James and Rose Keller of Elkins; great-nephew, Tyson Messenger of Sully; and great-niece, Lindsey Thompson of Sully, also survive.

Joe had worked as a truck driver for Southern West Virginia Asphalt and retired from West Virginia Paving in 2015. He was a member of Elkins Lodge No. 108 AF & AM; Scottish Rite of Freemasonry; Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons; Pilgrim Commandry No. 21 and Knights Templar.

He liked to bear hunt and spending time with his bear hunting buddies. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially his little dog, Ellie, who loved him dearly.

At his request, Joe will be cremated. Memorial contributions may be made to the Randolph County Humane Society, PO Box 785, Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Joe.
