Edgar Wilson Evans

Edgar Wilson Evans, a resident of Goodview, Virginia, died Jan. 9, 2022, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital at the age of 84.

He was born April 27, 1937, in Elkins, West Virginia, to the late Harley Brewer Evans and Lena Dove Lowther Evans.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Evans, of Vinton, Virginia; and two daughters, Cecelia Evans Owen and husband, Danny, of Halifax, Virginia, and Kimberly Evans Dameron and husband, Joey, of Goodview, Virginia; six grandchildren, Evan Owen and wife, Maria, of Lynchburg, Virginia, Mark Owen and wife, Mary, and Matthew Owen of Halifax, Virginia, Alexis Dameron, Julia Dameron and Joshua Dameron all of Goodview, Virginia; and two great-granddaughters, Aria Jane Owen of Lynchburg, Virginia, and McKenna Bailey Owen of Halifax, Virginia.

He is also survived by a special friend, Don Bowyer, and the Rainbow Forest Baptist Church Men’s Prayer Group.

He was the last surviving member his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ralph Evans, Robert (Bob) Evans and Hubert Evans; and seven sisters, Verda Nester, Virginia Hyre, Mildred Doer, Margaret Carr, Ruth Hitt, Katherine Chenoweth, and Mabel Cook.

He grew up working on the Evans Brothers Dairy farm, then began his career as a carpenter with Loren Chenoweth Construction, Elkins, West Virginia, Eric Reader Construction, Roanoke, VAirginia and J.E. Burton Construction, South Boston, Virginia.

Mr. Evans retired from the National Guard as a staff sergeant with 20 years of service to his country.

He attended Hart Chapel Church, Elkins, West Virginia. where he served as a board member. He later attended Winn’s Creek Baptist Church Halifax, Virginia, and Rainbow Forest Baptist Church, Troutville, Virginia, and was a past member of the Gideons International.

He was known in the Elkins Randolph County area as the “Rock Man” as he provided many tons of field rock for chimneys, fireplaces, and outside masonry on many homes in the area. He loved to hunt and, while he was able, always had a garden.

A memorial service will be held at Winn’s Creek Baptist Church, 3088 Howard P. Anderson Road, Halifax, Virginia, on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022 at 2 p.m.

The family will have a time of remembrance in Elkins, West Viginia, later.
