Barbara Lynn Mero Torres
Barbara Lynn Mero Torres, 71, a resident of Valley Bend, passed from this life Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2022, at home. She had been in her usual health and death was unexpected.
Barb was born Friday, Aug. 11, 1950, in Elkins, a daughter of the late Bruce Cortland Mero and Leila Grace Whetsell Mero.
She had one sister, Cathy Mero.
Her family moved to Caldwell, Ohio, in 1956 then to Tempe in 1959.
In the summer, Bobbie swam at the old Tempe Beach. Bobbie was Girls Athletic Association (GAA) president and a member of National Honor Society (NHS). She was an award winning swimmer and diver at the University of Arizona, where she graduated in 1975.
She was a U.S. Air Force veteran. In 1981, as an Air Force Reserve Guard Capt. and personnel officer for the 162nd Combat Communications Group, in North Highlands, California, she won a silver and a bronze medal in swimming at the International Police Olympics in Austin, Texas. She was a California State Park peace officer and arms instructor. She also worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon, California and New Mexico.
Bobbie married Roman “Ray” Luis Torres on March 14, 1984, giving her three stepchildren.
She had retired from the U.S. Forest Service. She and Ray had been living in West Virginia and were planning to move to Southern California where Ray is to begin his new job as Forest Supervisor for the Angeles National Forest. Bobbie passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours.
Bobbie’s request for cremation was honored.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday, Aug. 12, 2022, at 6 p.m. at Woodford Memorial United Methodist Church in Elkins.
Pastor Jeremiah Jasper will officiate.
A graveside service with interment will be held Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022, at 1 p.m. in the Canfield Cemetery in Cravensdale, where members of HW Daniels Post 29, American Legion, Tygart Valley Post 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Air Force Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
