Elizabeth Katherine ‘Betty’ Pennington

PENNINGTON

Elizabeth Katherine “Betty” Pennington, 92, a resident of Elkins, passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, in Mountain Memories Assisted Living & Retirement Center in Elkins under the care of West Virginia Caring Hospice.

She was born Dec. 23, 1930, in Elkins, a daughter of the late William B. Caplinger Jr. and the late Hoda Pingley Caplinger.

On Oct. 17, 1949, at Oakland, Maryland, she was married to Otha Carl Pennington, who preceded her in death Jan. 23, 2020. Surviving are three daughters, Dorothy Marie Price and husband,, Dennis of Elkins, Martha Diane Pennington, Manassas, Virginia, and Sharon Lee Wheeler and husband, David, of Elkins; three grandchildren, Elizabeth McLean and husband, Bryce, Christina Lyle and Jaron Wheeler and wife, Bailey; two step-grandchildren, Heather Yerem and husband, Jimmy, and Andy Price and wife, Lacey; nine great- grandchildren and six step- great grandchildren also survive.

Also preceding her in death was one sister, Eleanor M. Coonts.

Mrs. Pennington attended the schools of Randolph County and was a 1948 graduate of Elkins High School. She was employed as a teacher’s aide for many years in Randolph County prior to her retirement. She was a member of the Randolph County Association of Retired School Employees and a Life member of the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees. She was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church in Elkins.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. until noon, Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins.

A funeral service will be held at noon on Monday, from the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Julie Davis officiating.

Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery at Huttonsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 1100 S. Davis Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 or to Tyrand Cooperative Ministries, Inc., PO Box 365, Mill Creek, WV 26280 in memory of Mrs. Pennington.
