Dwight Dee ‘Gus’ Cooper

Dwight Dee “Gus” Cooper, 70, a life-long resident of Harman, passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 3, 2024 in the West Virginia Caring Hospice Center in Elkins.

He was born May 20, 1953, at Harman, a son of the late Lillian Gae Cooper and the late Roosevelt Raines Cooper.

On Feb. 17, 1979 at Oakland, Maryland, he was united in marriage to Janet White Cooper, who survives at Harman.

Also surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Cassie) Atkins; and one granddaughter, Lilliana Mae Atkins all of Whitmer, West Virginia. Five sisters, Barbara Shiflett and husband, Larry, of Bidwell, Ohio, Charlotte Vance and husband, Tom, of Harman, Wyhoma Orebaugh of Broadway, Virginia, Deloris Nicodemus of Charlestown, West Virginia, and Linda Carter of Shepherdstown, West Virginia; one brother, Gary Cooper and wife, JoAnn, of Harman, West Virginia; a sister-in-law, Trudy Cooper; several nieces and nephews; and his cat. Bootie also survive.

Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Kenneth Cooper, Don Allen Cooper and Raymond Kent Cooper.

Gus was a graduate of Harman High School. He was employed by Asplundh Tree Service for many years and had worked for MEC and Kermit Butcher prior to becoming disabled.

He was a member if the Thomas Fairfax Lodge No. 174 AF&AM and the Harman Church of the Brethren.

He loved bluegrass music and playing bluegrass on his guitar, working on weed eaters, chain saws and collecting die cast cars.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, at the Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, from the funeral home chapel with Rev. John Moyers officiating.

Interment will follow in the Mountain State Memorial Gardens near Gilman where Thomas Fairfax Lodge No 174 AF & AM will conduct Masonic graveside rites.

The Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins is in charge of the arrangements for Dwight Dee “Gus” Cooper.
