Springtime enlivens volunteer spirit

Kump Education Center has benefitted significantly from volunteer help this spring. Melodee Price organized the WV Make It Shine initiative with volunteers picking up trash in the rain on April Fools’ Day. It was a cold and wet Saturday morning, but that hearty crew collected debris from every corner of the property and made two great piles of sticks and garbage bags for the City to remove.

Tree Board members Katy McClane and Linda Sylva have been working to improve conditions for the apple trees planted by the Sustainability Studies Program from Davis & Elkins College. They have been digging out the sod and clearing away vines near the apple tree roots throughout the month of April. Some of the sod was moved by D&E Lacrosse team members to hold the bank beside the parking lot. McClane also brought in leftover sod from the Event Center and started planting it up against the bank.

Last Saturday was the Great Day of Service when members of Davis Memorial Presbyterian Church and Summit Church volunteered to help improve the grounds. The Summit team pulled weeds to prepare the flower beds around the house for summer flowers while the Presbyterians worked on moving more sod to the parking lot bank and fertilizing the apple trees.

David Hyer and Jean Snedegar are two Presbyterian volunteers who have helped out at Kump Education Center for several years. They remember when church members helped support falling plaster in the third floor after the roof project and when church seamstresses made tea towels to sell on Mother’s Day. DMPC minister Dr. Peter Vial serves on the Kump House Trust and has helped the Education Center in many ways over the years.

Another Presbyterian, Monica Varchetto has been leading the Community Garden activities at Kump Education Center for the last few years. She knows a great deal about good organic gardening, and her plot shows her gardening skill. Monica is the person to call if anyone would like to grow flowers and vegetables at Kump Education Center this summer.

Pam Byrne is working with the apple trees in the orchard and bee hives at the back of the Kump property. She is a great resource of information on growing bees, geese, water testing or just about anything outdoors.

Kump Education Center Board appreciates all the effort and expertise volunteers bring to KEC. The incredible task of turning this historic home into a public property requires much time and effort. Board member Bob Wilmoth has agreed to serve as Volunteer Coordinator, and we would love to hear from people who wish to volunteer at KEC this summer (304-637-7820).
