Boos & Applause

Applause to the army of volunteers it takes to present the West Virginia Strawberry Festival each year. This year’s edition of the festival has gone off without a hitch despite rainy weather, and has offered good food, good music and fun all week long in Buckhannon. The festival’s Grand Feature Parade kicks off today at 1 p.m. Here’s hoping the rain holds off and allows for another great WVSF event.

Applause to the efforts underway to enhance Elkins Town Square. This week the Randolph County Commission donated $10,000 to the Elkins Rotary Club for their Town Square Canopy Project. Hoy Ferguson, past president of Rotary, said steel has already been ordered to begin the project to build an amphitheater in the Town Square once financing efforts are completed. Also this week, the Randolph County Development Authority unveiled a new layout and vision for the historic Elkins Railyard. RCDA Executive Director Robbie Morris said the new layout better displays the vision the RCDA has for development of the property. All this activity will only enhance the value and significance of the Town Square and the Railyard to our community.

Applause to the hundreds of area residents who have graduated from college in recent weeks. Davis & Elkins College held commencement ceremonies last week, while West Virginia Wesleyan College and Alderson Broaddus University held their graduations the weekend before. This weekend our local high school’s 2018 graduations began, with Philip Barbour High School’s commencement being the first in the area. We wish all of our local graduates — of both high school and college — the best as they move into the next stages of their lives.

Boo to those who are tossing trash into the Tygart Valley River. Representatives of Big Timber Brewing Company, AmeriCorps and U.S. Fish and Wildlife, members of Save the Tygart Valley Water Association and other community residents removed trash, tires and debris from the Tygart Valley River last Saturday morning. Great for them and thank you! But we ask the question, why throw the trash into the river? Do people like to hear a splash, or are they that lazy and disgusting that they take pleasure in creating an eyesore for everyone? Regardless of the reasons, we hope concerned citizens will call the police the next time they see some lowlife tossing trash into any of our beautiful rivers.
