Boos & Applause

Applause to the progress being made on the downtown Elkins Town Square amphitheater project. The Randolph County Development Authority board unanimously approved a bid for the project Wednesday. Officials plan to break ground next week, with the ceremony set for 9 a.m. on Oct. 19.

Applause to the fourth annual Scarecrow Festival, which is coming to a close this weekend. What a great addition the scarecrows made to the streets of Elkins, but like all good things, the festival must end. Thank you to all the volunteers who brought us the colorful and entertaining scarecrows. We look forward to their return next year.

Applause to Randolph County officials for backing a project to upgrade a local veterans memorial. The Randolph County Commission voted to contribute $700 to the Memorial Lighting Project. Jeff Woods, chairman of the All Veterans Memorial Council, said the goal of the lighting project is to change the lighting units from halogen bulbs to LED bulbs, which would save on bulb costs and electric bills.

Applause to the Beverly Heritage Center for passing along 200 years of storytelling through their Lantern Tours. Officials invite the public to learn some of these tales during the tours, which continue at 7 p.m. this evening. The host, Beverly resident and local historian Karl Mulac, will lead a lanternlight tour of the Beverly historic district. Along the way, costumed interpreters will bring to life eerie tales from the town’s past, including frontier tragedies, Civil War stories and unanswered questions from a long-ago murder case.

Applause to the Elkins-Randolph County Library’s participation in the Read Aloud West Virginia program. A community training for readers will be offered at the library from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by Mary Kay Bond, executive director of Read Aloud West Virginia. Read Aloud West Virginia’s goal is to motivate children to love reading.
