Boos & Applause

Applause to Debra Schmidlen, who is taking a leadership role in the education of local children. The Randolph County Board of Education voted Wednesday evening to name Schmidlen to the position of superintendent. Schmidlen has served as assistant superintendent for two years under Gabriel “Gabe” Devono, who recently announced his retirement.

Applause too all the area students who graduate from high school during the past two weeks. We wish them the best of luck as they start their journeys into adult life.

Applause to all the veteran organizations who offered ceremonies on Memorial Day Monday for keeping the memory alive of all the brave service men and women that gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country.

Applause to Gary Schoonover for his 30 years of dedicated service and countless hours volunteering his time as a board member of Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center. Following his retirement, Schoonover will continue to serve ERCC and the board of directors in an advisory role.

Boo to the criminals who stole radiators, batteries, cables and accessories from the Osiris Shriners Clowns. A $2,000 reward is being offered for information regarding the theft and vandalism of items owned by the Shriners. These local club members are associated with the philanthropic arm of Shriners International, which raises money for the care of children. Shriners live and walk among us. Shriners help children of all ages, race, color, creed, sex or sect, disability and national origin free of charge. When found and convicted, we are hopeful these thieves have the book thrown at them and will face a long sentence to think of what a horrific crime they committed.
