Buckhannon-Upshur came within one game of the Class AAA State Tournament last season, coming up short after losing to Musselman in the region final. The good news for head coach Tom Hasbrouck, is that several key players return from that 21-4 team.
"We certainly have the nucleus of that team back," Hasbrouck said. "We should have a very strong squad both offensively and also defensively. The big question will be our pitching. If the pitching works out, we can have a pretty solid season."
Six players return to the everyday lineup; this includes the infield of junior first baseman Megan Williams, junior second baseman Brooklyn Waddell, senior shortstop Morgan Wright, and third baseman Carly Gregory.

Buckhannon-Upshur will return a strong crop players this season. Returning for the 2012 season are, from left, Carly Gregory, Kelsey Wagoner, Mandy Lewis, Morgan Wright and taylor Fealy.
Two starters return to the outfield in senior Kelsey Wagoner and junior Claire Linger. According to Hasbrouck, filling the catcher spot and the one outfield spot will be critical to filling out a productive lineup.
Pitching wise, Hasbrouck is looking to pitch by committee concept. At this time, he sees several players potentially logging innings on the mound. This includes Wright, who was 9-1 in 2010, Williams, and sophomores Sarah Ling and Julie Tenney.
"It is so early right now, that we may not get the answer to some of our questions anytime soon. I haven't even made cuts yet," Hasbrouck said. "But we have a veteran team, and I think we will be all right."
