Camp hosts wounded veterans

Challenged Athletes of West Virginia and Challenged Athletes at Timberline hosted the Warfighter Sports Veteran's Family Summer Camp at Canaan Valley on July 27 to 30.

Warfighter Sports Camps are open to severely wounded soldiers and their families. Fourteen families - with 50 people - attended the inaugural summer sports camp representing soldiers who were wounded in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo.

All activities at Warfighter Sports, lodging and meals are provided to the soldiers and their families by the hosting organization; veterans and their families are not required to pay to attend. Camp activities included canoeing, bicycling, horseback riding, a cave trip to Seneca Rocks, a cave trip to the Sinks of Gandy, fishing, hiking and sightseeing.

Local groups that partnered with Challenged Athletes of West Virginia to sponsor the camp included: Tygarts Valley Lions Club, Davis Memorial Hospital, Potomac Highlands Wounded Warrior Outreach, Operation Military Kids, Monongahela National Forest, Timberline Four Seasons Resort, Timberline Stables, Blackwater Outdoor Adventures and Sirianni's Restaurant at Canaan Valley.

Challenged Athletes of West Virginia is headquartered at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, and its mission is to provide outdoor sports and recreation opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. CAWV is a chapter of Disabled Sports USA and a Parlaympic Sport Club.
