Organization to celebrate anniversary

August 18, 2012
By Belinda Toms Executive Director of Tyrand Cooperative Ministries

Editor's note: This is the last in a series of submitted articles and columns about the history of Tyrand Cooperative Ministries, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

For the past few months, we have enjoyed reading the articles about the history of Tyrand Cooperative Ministries' 50 years of serving the less fortunate in our area, and we are excited about the future of our ministry.

Our slogan, "Faith and Action Joined in Love," has come to mean living out our Christian discipleship in response to the needs of others.

The mission of Tyrand includes each person who volunteers time, talents or donations in order to help us in all our programs. Our Home Repair Program has just finished for the summer, and we worked in approximately 20 homes. The youth and adults who come to Tyrand each summer to work in the area experience a "hands-on" discipleship by repairing home of those in need. Some tasks include building wheelchair ramps, painting and much more.

We have a food pantry that is open during the week and expands into the holiday season by providing a Thanksgiving Day meal, which is open to anyone. The committee members also work to provide Christmas food baskets. Tyrand also works with other agencies in providing emergency assistance for utilities, rent and some medications.

Over the last three years, we have noticed an increase in individuals and families needing assistance and a decrease in individual donations to help with the emergency needs. It was at that point we knew we had to be creative in raising funds, so we began selling items on eBay. If you have any item you would like to donate to us for eBay, we would appreciate the donation.
