Buckhannon River Watershed Association has been recognized by the West Virginia Watershed Network for its accomplishments in improving watershed health through its outreach and education efforts.

On Sept. 8, the Buckhannon River Watershed Association was awarded an Outreach and Education award during the 14th annual Watershed Celebration Day at Tornado.

Members of this watershed group are very active and proud to share their accomplishments with their community. They have produced a color brochure describing their organizations, as well as two well-received newsletters during the past year. These publications, as well as brochures dealing with sedimentation, nonpoint source pollution and the disposal of unused medicines, are available at all public meetings, local businesses, the Upshur County Courthouse and the Buckhannon city building. In addition, copies of the newsletters are sent to more than 100 families and businesses, and are available at the numerous events in which the group participates in within their community.

Its education and outreach activities were again visible this year at the West Virginia Strawberry Festival, where the Watershed Association co-sponsored a canoe race held in its namesake river.

The group's members also set up a display table at the annual Maple Syrup Festival in Pickens, the Go Green Convention in Buckhannon and the Intern Fair at West Virginia Wesleyan College. The association also coordinated a major undertaking between Buckhannon-Upshur High School and West Virginia Wesleyan College, which involved more than 50 high school students sampling water near their homes, then bringing the samples to school and analyzing them.
