On Wednesday, members of the local community will come together to lend a helping hand to someone who usually is the one doing the helping: Roy Simms.
Simms, the former head coach of the Elkins High School boys' basketball team and current assistant coach of the Davis & Elkins College men's basketball squad, is in need of a heart and kidney transplant. It is estimated Simms' medical expenses will be $1.2 million for the lifesaving operation, and he must fund nearly $240,000 of that total.
That's where Wednesday's event comes into play. Community leaders are hosting a fundraising dinner for Simms. WVU head men's basketball coach Bob Huggins will join them along with members of his coaching staff, and Mountaineers present and past.
Huggins will serve as the keynote speaker during the dinner, which is slated for 6 p.m. at Orchard Hall. Tickets are only $50 per person and may be purchased at The Inter-Mountain, Elkins Radio Corp., Peter Pan Cleaners, Elkins Fordland and Innovative Investments.
We're told attendees may pose for photos with Huggins and his crew. Those on hand also will sign autographs. It's a win-win evening out for any Mountaineer fan who wants to give back to a man who has done so much for the children of this community.
In addition to the dinner, a silent auction will be conducted at the venue. Trip packages and other items will be on the slate, including a white, contemporary dresser that is valued at $1,000 from Cupp's Furniture.
The night promises to have something for everyone. Let's hope it helps to boost Simms' spirits and the fundraising efforts are a slam dunk!
