Officials pulled a body from the Tygart River after it was discovered around 1 p.m. Monday, officials said.

The Elkins Police Department, which is investigating the situation, confirmed Monday afternoon that a body was recovered from the water, but would release no further information.

"A body was found," Patrolman G.E. Sigley said, but would not elaborate on the person's identity. Sigley said the cause of death was unknown, and that it was unclear how long the body had been in the water.

Members of the Elkins Fire Department use a boat to reach a body in the Tygart Valley River on Monday behind the Easy Street Apartments.

The Elkins Fire Department was called to the scene to retrieve the body from the river. It appeared the body was caught on tree limbs in the water. Randolph County Corner Brenda Dailey was also on the scene Monday.

Once news about the situation began to spread, a group of residents gathered along the river on Barron Avenue. Several people used cell phones to take pictures of the efforts to retrieve the body.

Sigley and 2nd Lt. E.R. Canfield were on the scene behind the Easy Street Apartments along with Dailey and members of the fire department, including Chief Tom Meader.

Dailey could be seen pointing towards the body and giving direction to EFD members on how to retrieve the body.

The fire department launched a small red and white boat, owned by one of the members, from the Scott Ford Road boat launch, a fire department representative said. Three firefighters used rope to secure the body to the boat and traveled back toward the launch before removing the body from the water.

The Randolph County EMS also responded to the scene.
