Mountain Lions to face Williamstown today

CHARLESTON - Tucker County will seek revenge when it faces Williamstown in Class A quarterfinal action today at the Civic Center.

Game time is slated for 9 p.m.

The fourth-seed Lady Mountain Lions (19-5) lost to the fifth-seed Yellowjackets (14-9) in last year's quarterfinals 84-82 on Liz Flowers' layup with 8.7 seconds left.

Tucker County will begin Class A state tournament quarterfinal action at 9 p.m. today against Williamstown at the Charleston Civic Center. Flowers had 47 points in the thrilling victory.

While Flowers has graduated, several Tucker County players who played in that contest return, including guard Stephanie Betler, whose basket with 1:19 left gave the Lady Mountain Lions their final lead.

Betler, a junior guard, leads Tucker County in scoring with 14.3 points per game. Senior guard Amber Evans adds 13.9 points, followed by junior forward Bekah Simmons (8.4), 6-1 junior center Savannah Ambrose (5.1) and senior guard Hunter Radford (4.7).

Sophomore forward Aiyana Kachmarek averages 4.0 points off the bench.

Williamstown counters with seniors Kenzie Smith (19.0), Brooke Cieslewski (13.1) and Carley Ellison (10.0).

Today's winner will face either four-time state champion Huntington St. Joseph or Man at 1 p.m. in Friday's semifinals.

Today's other Class A semifinals are No. 6 Tygarts Valley (17-7) vs. No. 6 St. Marys (23-1) and No. 2 Wheeling Central (21-4) vs. No. 7 Valley Fayette (13-7).

Class AAA quarterfinal games on tap for today include No. 2 Morgantown (19-5) vs. No. 7 Martinsburg (15-6) and No. 1 Spring Valley (22-3) vs. No. 8 Capital (10-13).

Class AA quarterfinal action will begin on Thursday, along with two Class AAA matchups.

The semifinals are set for Friday.
