Fire damages Elkins church

Fire marshal to investigate blaze at Central Baptist Church

Area fire fighters fought a blaze that broke out at approximately 10:55 p.m. Saturday evening at an Elkins church.

Members of the Elkins Volunteer Fire Department, Leading Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Beverly Fire Department worked on the fire for three-and-a-half hours.

"The flames were contained to the bell tower and front of the Central Baptist Church Building on Country Club Road in Elkins," Elkins fire fighter J.W. Jones said.

Emergency personnel fight a fire that started at approximately 11 p.m. Saturday on County Club Road in Elkins. Fire fighters from Elkins Volunteer Fire Department, Beverly Volunteer Fire Department and Leading Creek Volunteer Fire Department and crews from Randolph County EMS and Randolph County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene of the fire in a former Baptist Church. Members of the Belington Volunteer Fire Department were placed on stand-by at the Elkins station during the incident.

"The rest of the building sustained heavy smoke and water damage."

Jones said members of the Belington Volunteer Fire Department covered the Elkins Fire Department during the fire. He also said a member of the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office has been called to investigate the blaze.

No estimates of total damage are available at this time.

Members of the Randolph County Sheriff's Office and Randolph County EMS also assisted at the scene. No injuries were reported.
