Buckhannon City Council unanimously denied a request to have a 5k race at nighttime at the Riverwalk near West Virginia Wesleyan College for safety reasons.

Council members noted there are no lights along the path. Sierra Jackson with Overland Missions, who made the request, said the race would be a "glow-in-the-dark race," utilizing glow sticks.

"I would be encouraged to deny this request. I'm all for 5k runs, but I think this should be held in the daylight," Recorder Rich Clemens said.

The race would have taken place from 9 p.m. to midnight April 19.

The 5k race was planned as a missionary fundraiser to Zambia, Africa for Overland Missions.
