When a community comes together, anything is possible - and the proof of that was realized Monday night in Philippi.

Citizens have banded together after a January decision by the Barbour County Board of Education to eliminate middle school coaches in the face of budget constraints. Parents and community members quickly formed the Barbour All County Sports Organization and worked on many fundraising events to raise the $34,000 needed to rescind the board's decision to cut the coaches.

On Monday, Lori Talbott Wetzel, president of the BACSO, presented members of the Barbour County Board of Education a resolution outlining the organization's donation for middle school coaching salaries.

Barbour County Board of Education President Bob Wilkins signs a resolution Monday, which was unanimously approved by the board, to accept a donation from the Barbour All County Sports Organization, for a restricted account reserved for coaching salaries and benefits.

Members of the Barbour County Board of Education voted unanimously to accept the resignation, which was signed by board President Bob Wilkins. The BACSO presented the board with a check for just over $24,000. A private donor will pay the remaining $10,000.

Board member Joanne McConnell asked what the next step would be in the process.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Super said once the $10,000 is received from the donor, the board will rescind the reduction in force of the coaches.

"This is a very special day for the county," Wilkins said. "We appreciate the time and efforts of those working to raise money for this and those donating to the cause. This is the beginning of new relationships. We are still facing a funding crisis, but I am glad everyone came together to solve this problem."
