Mystery play coming to Asylum

June 21, 2013
The Inter-Mountain

The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum will host an evening of mystery, sweets and fun on June 29.

Guests will enjoy gourmet desserts, a performance of the musical "Gumshoes Never Cry, But Coppers Sometimes Do," and an hourlong guided tour through the museum rooms of the asylum.

Two shows will be offered, at 5:30 p.m. and at 8 p.m. Tickets include dessert, the show and the museum tour. Reservations are required, and they can be made by calling 304-269-5070.

The musical will be performed at TALA in Weston. The facility served as a sanctuary for the mentally ill from 1864 to 1994. Since opening for tours in March 2008, more than 125,000 travelers have visited this National Historic landmark.

TALA is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the facility, as well as bringing awareness to the history of the treatment of mental illness and the facility that shaped a community. The proceeds from tours, events and souvenir sales fund ongoing restoration and preservation projects.

"Gumshoes" is set in 1940 Manhattan and follows private eye Dirk Manzman and Capt. Finian Flanagan O'Callahan as they try to solve the murders of several prominent businessmen and keep America out of a brewing world war. "Gumshoes" features a cast of memorable characters, from rich widows with shady pasts to an aging showgirl, a female mobster and a German police lieutenant who wants to take over Manhattan and the world. Best of all, the audience gets to decide "whodunit" with a special ballot listing four characters.

Additional information on other plays at the Asylum, tours and events is available by contacting the TALA office at 304-269-5070 or emailing assistant@talawv.com.
