Teams raising funds

July 13, 2013
By Beth Christian Broschart Staff Writer , The Inter-Mountain

The Elkins Little League 12-year-old All-Stars will compete in Charleston July 21 during the West Virginia State Tournament. The team swept both the area and district tournaments in July, winning each game by the 10-run mercy rule.

"It has been nearly six years since Elkins competed in the state tournament," said manager Jim Gainer. "Elkins has never won during a state tournament before, but we are hopeful."

The team will sponsor a car wash from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Elkins Kroger to raise funds for the trip.

"We appreciate all of the community support," Gainer said. "The Elkins community is so good to help and we want to thank everyone for supporting the teams."

Gainer said the next step from the state tournament would be the Southeast Region Tournament the second week of August.

"If the team is successful in Charleston, they would travel to Warner Robins, Ga., the week of Aug. 12," Gainer said.

The Elkins Little League 10-11-year-old All-Stars will take to the field at 4 p.m. today and Sunday at Riverbend Park in Elkins for the West Virginia State Tournament. The 11-year-old team is sponsoring a fundraiser selling Zuhl's frozen lemonade during the tournament.
