Willard Simmons

Willard B. Simmons, 96, a resident of Elkins, passed away Saturday morning, Oct. 19, 2013, in Valentine's Assisted Living.

He was born April 5, 1917, in Upshur County, a son of the late Elza Simmons and Etta Goodwin Simmons.

On June 28, 1937, at Oakland, Md., he was married to Bernadine McGee Simmons, who survives.

Also surviving is one son, Gary Lane Simmons of Huttonsville; one daughter, Willa Dean "Muggins" Wamsley of Waynesboro, Va.; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Wamsley, Louie Simmons, Lisa Simmons, Leslie Simmons and Scott Simmons; five great-grandchildren, Dustin Simmons, Deanna Simmons, David Meadows, Jacob Meadows and Grant Simmons.

Also preceding him in death was one son, David Neil Simmons; two brothers, Louis and Harry Simmons; and five sisters, Edith Lower, Hazel Poling, Mazie Rexroad, Lilyan McGee and Ruth White.

Mr. Simmons was a veteran of the United States Army and had worked as an auto mechanic for Shavers Garage and Ward Auto Parts, and as a bus driver and mechanic for the Randolph County Board of Education prior to his retirement.

He was a talented musician, a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class of the church, H.W. Daniels Post 29 American Legion and the West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at Tomblyn Funeral Home in Elkins. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jim Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in the Brick Church Cemetery near Huttonsville, where the presentation of the American Flag will be made by members of the West Virginia National Guard Honor Guard Program.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 1100 South Davis Ave., Elkins, WV 26241 in memory of Mr. Simmons.
