ONA - Elkins High School's Austin Hamrick and Matt Wallace turned in solid efforts at Saturday's Class AAA state meet.

Hamrick, a senior, placed 11th, just one spot shy of all-state honors with a time of 16:28, while Wallace, a junior, was 12th (16:29).

"Austin and Matt ran their best times and gave it everything they had," Elkins coach Shellie Burda said. "They did a great job."

Elkins’ Austin Hamrick competes at Saturday’s state meet in Ona.

Elkins finished ninth as a team with 229 points. University (64) held off Cabell Midland by 13 points for the team title.

"I did my best and left everything out there," Hamrick said. "It was a great race and I was glad to be a part of it and finishing out my cross country career with my team."

Other Tiger finishers included senior Remington Knight (18:02) in 59th, Dalton Hamrick (18:52) 81st, Ben Huffman (19:00) in 83rd, Brendan Wallace (19:32) in 94th and Will Gongola (20:26) in 96th.

"This year was an incredible experience," Knight said. "It was great to get back to states one last time."

"Remington ended his high school cross country career on a positive note," Burda added.

Elkins loses only two seniors, and Burda is excited about the future.

"We are really going to miss Austin and Remington next year. They have been very positive role models.

"Our freshmen ran good times and found out what it takes to compete on this level. They will take the lessons learned today and use that to prepare for next season. I am proud of how far we have come this year."

George Washington's Matthew Brafford took the individual crown with a time of 15:39.
