Filing begins Monday in Buckhannon

Waltz will not seek re-election

BUCKHANNON - Monday is the first day candidates may file to run in the city of Buckhannon's municipal election, which will be held May 13 in conjunction with the state primary election.

Three slots are available - a city recorder position and two seats on Buckhannon City Council.

And while City Recorder Rich Clemens and Councilman Tom O'Neill have declared their intentions to run as incumbents, Councilman John Waltz on Friday said he will not seek re-election.

"I have decided at this point to not seek re-election," Waltz, the director of admission at West Virginia Wesleyan College, wrote in an email to media outlets. "I'm extremely proud of the things Council and mostly that the city employees have achieved and have been honored to be the smallest part of that.

"Aside from providing the most attention to my professional position and increased responsibilities there and to bringing more students and families to Buckhannon through Wesleyan, I hope in the next several years to take this time to be more involved in the City in the advancement of the arts through Buckhannon Community Theatre and other groups, to support healthy living initiatives, and to contribute more to groups like Create Buckhannon," Waltz continued.

"During the recent special election there was a lot of interest in positions on Council and I would love to see some of those individuals come forward and run again. I think change at every level of government is healthy and I look forward to serving the rest of my term and to supporting the great things going on in Buckhannon and Upshur County for years to come."

Individuals interested in filing for Waltz's position or another office may begin doing so on Monday in Clemens' office. The last day to file in person is Friday, Jan. 24, by 4:30 p.m. Filings mailed to City Hall, 70 E. Main St., Buckhannon, WV, 26201, must be postmarked by midnight Saturday, Jan. 25.

Each of the three available positions carries a four-year term, according to information Clemens provided at a recent City Council meeting.

Voters will also have an opportunity to determine whether they want to renew excess levies that provide funding for the purpose of operating, maintaining and equipping the Charles W. Gibson Public Library in Buckhannon. The levy renewal, if passed, will be in effect for five fiscal years beginning July 1, 2016.
