ELKINS - All county school systems in West Virginia are feeling growing pains while transitioning to all online assessment testing, and members of the Randolph County Board of Education were reassured that systems are in place and that the county is ready to enter the digital age of testing.

Director of Technology Jonathan Paine told board members he wants to make the new form of testing successful for all students.

"The statewide readiness testing has been delayed twice already due to weather," Paine said. "It has been rescheduled for Feb. 27."

Jonathan Paine, Randolph County Schools Director of Technology, talks with the Randolph County Board of Education Monday night, giving updates on the status of online student testing. Paine said the statewide site readiness test has been pushed back to Feb. 27.

Paine said the exercise would allow all schools to evaluate and assess their networks.

"Can our bandwidth hold all the computers testing at once?" Paine said.

Paine noted, though, there will be a practice test in March so students can get an idea of what to expect.

He said the test this year will be the WESTEST 2 assessment.

"If we find any concerns during the assessment, we will be able to modify our network," Paine said.

Paine also noted the online writing assessment is coming up as well.

"We did not have any issues with that in the past," Paine said. "We want to make sure we are ready for the online testing and that students will have no interruption during their testing."

In other business, Superintendent Terry George said the dates are set for graduation. Tygarts Valley High School commencement will be 7 p.m. May 22, Harman School graduation will be 7 p.m. May 22, Elkins High School graduation will be 7 p.m. May 23 and Pickens School graduation will be 1 p.m. May 24.

Board President Lisa Wamsley reminded board members that the Artsbank Auction is slated for 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Elks Club.

The next Randolph County Board of Education meeting is slated for 6 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Central Office.
