MILL CREEK - Stephanie Betler tossed in 15 points to help Class A, No. 4 Tucker County defeat No. 10 Tygarts Valley, 49-34, Tuesday night in Potomac Valley Conference action.

While the Mountain Lions (9-3) picked up the victory, coach Jim Ambrose said he wasn't pleased with his team's performance.

"We played awful," Ambrose said. "The first half was so bad, that I didn't know what to say at halftime. I couldn't even yell at them. We always play good defense and when we don't, it upsets me. We came out in the second half and played much better. I told the four seniors that they needed to set the tone and they got it done."

Tygarts Valley (8-5) took a 20-19 lead into the locker room at halftime. However, Tucker County went on an 18-4 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Senior Bekah Simmons scored eight points for the Mountain Lions. Center Savannah Ambrose blocked five shots and scored five points. Freshman Elizabeth Nichols led the team in rebounds with six.

Paige Pritt paced Tygarts Valley with nine points. Kelsey Arbogast contributed seven points, all from the free-throw line.

"I felt we played well tonight," TVHS coach Mike DiPasquale said. "We got beat by 15 points, but last time they beat us by 40. We missed a bunch of layups in the third quarter that really hurt us. Overall, I'm pleased with our performance. I hope we can continue to get some gym time and get in a rhythm."

Tucker County will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Pendleton County for another PVC contest.

Tygarts Valley will host Union at 7:30 p.m. the same evening for the second "Bringing Hope One Basket at a Time" cancer awareness fundraiser game.

B-U 56, Webster County 46

UPPER GLADE - Freshmen Makayla Reynolds and Lauren Louk scored 15 point each to help Buckhannon-Upshur cruise past Webster County, 56-46, on Tuesday night.

"We fell behind early," Bucs coach Tristen Gray said. "We came out in man coverage, but their penetration forced a change. We started the second quarter in our match up zone and they weren't able to get the penetration against that defense."

B-U trailed 14-5 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Bucs outscored the Highlanders 18-7 in the second quarter to take a 23-21 lead at intermission.

"In the second half, we focused on spacing the floor for open looks at the basket," Gray said. "This allowed Reynolds to score six points in the quarter. They made a push late in the third quarter and cut our largest lead, 12 points, to three. We were able to pull away thanks to a 17 point quarter, that seven players scored in."

Senior Samantha Stout led Webster County in scoring with 13 points. Junior Taylor Anderson contributed 11 points.

The Bucs (5-8) will entertain sectional rival Elkins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a Big 10 Conference matchup.

Preston 54, Philip Barbour 46

PHILIPPI - Preston defeated Philip Barbour 54-46 Tuesday night in Big 10 play.

Chelsea Mayle led the Colts in scoring.

"We played another tough opponent," PB coach Stan Fitzwater said. "We played really well in the first half. They went on a 10-0 run in the third quarter and busted the game open. We just couldn't climb back in it after that."

PB trailed 24-23 at halftime.

The Colts will host Liberty at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
