Herbert R. Holbert, 92, a resident of Mt. Liberty community, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 4, 1921, in Belington, a son of the late Thomas and Bertha (Daugherty) Holbert.
He was united in marriage Sept. 30, 1942, to Carol (Corley) Holbert for 71 years, who survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Dianna Johnson Davide of Philippi, Linda Vanmeter of White Plains, Md., and Brenda Condon of Weymouth, Mass.; one son, Danny Holbert and wife, Kathy, of Philippi; one sister, Geneva Layne of Philippi; grandchildren, G.T. Johnson and wife, Belinda, of Philippi, Kelly McPherson and husband, Johnny, of Maryland, Darren Johnson of Philippi, Heather Whetzel and husband, Rick, of Virginia, Stacy Peddicord and husband, Rob, of Maryland, Tommy Condon and wife, Crystal, of Massachusetts, Jennifer Whetzel and husband, Tommy, of Philippi, Mandy Sue Whetzel of Massachusetts, and Timmy Bisceglia and wife, Megan, of Maine; great-grandchildren, Jessica Cecil and husband, Jackson, of Florida, Samantha Roy and husband, Earl, of Philippi, Allie Whetzel and Chris Whetzel, both of Virginia, Jacob Peddicord of Maryland, Travis McPherson of Maryland, Allanya Peddicord of Maryland, Matthew McPherson and Justin McPherson, both of Maryland, Cameron Whetzel and Emma Whetzel, both of Philippi and Samantha Condon of Massaschusetts; and several nieces and nephews.
Herbert was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Leahy and Juanita Holbert; two brothers, Thomas Holbert and Homer Holbert; and four sons-in-law, George Johnson, John Davide, Ken Vanmeter and Tom Condon.
Herbert worked as a warehouse supervisor for Safe-Way Foods. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Jobb in the Pacific Ocean. Herbert was an active member of American Legion Post 44 where he participated in 150 honor guard services, a lifetime member of Belington Veterans of Foregin Wars 410, a member of Barbour Church of Christ, Mount Liberty Community and Barbour County Senior Center.
Herbert enjoyed antique cars, making apple butter and collecting Fisher-Price toys.
Friends will be received at Wright Funeral Home, 216 N. Walnut St. in Philippi Sunday, Feb. 23, from 3-8 p.m. and Monday from 8-11:30 a.m., the service hour with Evangelist Stan Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in West Virginia National Cemetery with full military honors being accorded.
