Elkins Post 29 pounds Fairmont, 24-2

FAIRMONT — Kyle Riggleman drove in 10 runs Thursday as Elkins Post 29 cruised past Fairmont Post 17, 24-2, in American Legion baseball action at Robert C. Byrd High School.

“I challenged the guys going into the game,” Post 29 manager Chris George said. “After last night, one of the most disappointing losses in my 14-year tenure here, we battled back with one of the most impressive wins I’ve had since I’ve been around.

“We challenged them before the game to focus better, prepare better and take everything serious and play for Elkins Post 29, play for the name on the front of the jersey. We did.

“We hit the ball extremely well and this is what this team is capable of when we focus,” George said. “I saw it in the 8-1 start to begin the year. Brett Smith pitched real well. Overall, it’s a sample size of what this team can do if we can just get consistent.”

Brett Smith (2-1) earned the victory on the mound. He went 6 innings, giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 5 batters and walking 3 others.

Riggleman set the pace at the plate for Elkins Post 29. He finished the game 5 for 6 with 10 RBIs and 1 run scored.

Other notable performances included: Sam Ross, 6 for 6 with 5 runs scored and 2 RBIs; Jared Kerns, 4 for 6 with 3 runs scored; Luke Petrice, 3 for 6 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBIs; and Ben McDonald, 3 for 4 with 4 runs scored and 4 RBIs.

Elias Gordon recorded the loss for Post 17. In 4 innings of work, he scattered 10 runs on 11 hits and struck out 4 batters.

Elkins Post 29 (10-7) is set to host Wheeling Post 1 on Saturday at noon at Robin Harvey Memorial Field at Bluegrass Park.

Afterward, Wheeling will challenge Bridgeport Post 68 at 2:30 p.m. Elkins and Bridgeport will then cap the afternoon with a 5 p.m. contest.
