ELKINS — Lewis County High School senior Jacob White was in Elkins recently to represent the Minutemen for The Inter-Mountain’s upcoming football preview guide, and said he is looking forward to his senior year.

Having played two years of middle school football at Robert L. Bland, and all four years now for LCHS, White is revved up with a familiar battle cry to represent his local community once more. White will be a starter on both sides of the ball as a running back on offense, and a rover while carrying out his defensive responsibilities.

“I love football, I’ve played from flag on up through, it has become a part of me,” White said. “You want to be in shape to play the whole game. You don’t want to have to come out of the game to get a break, you just want to be out there all the time.”

Lewis County head coach Dustin Cogar said, “We’re definitely going to need a lot from Jacob White this year.” The Minutemen were hit hard by graduation, and Cogar said they are working on depth and looking to their seniors and returning starters for leadership.

“Everybody has been putting in hard work at practice,” White said. “It’s awesome to help represent the Minutemen. When I was a younger kid and watching the older players and wanting to be them, it’s awesome now to be at this point. I try to be a good role model for the younger kids.”

A home fan base is something that is very important to White and all athletes donning school colors and trying to represent their school on the fields of play. White said the local community’s support means a lot.

“Friday nights are great, people get together and come out to the game to cheer for us,” White said. “We get amped up when we see those Lewis County shirts in the stands. It always helps when the crowd gets behind us.”

Lewis County will open its 2017 season at home on Aug. 25 when playing host to fellow Big 10 Conference AA foe Bridgeport. Kickoff in Weston is slated for 7 p.m.
