Lady Vikings drop road heartbreaker

PETERSBURG — The Lady Vikings led fellow Class AA East Fairmont, 47-32, to start the fourth and final frame Saturday, but the Lady Bees’ freshman Kierra Bartholow sank some key three-pointers in the fourth to help the visitors get out of town with a 57-53 win.

“East jumped out to an 8-0 lead, and then we controlled the game a lot after that,” PHS coach John Webster said. “They hit several threes in the fourth.

“Our team is working hard, and it was the third day in a row that we played. Not to take anything away from our opponent, but we did seem a little tired in the fourth,” he said.

The Lady Vikings caught wind and fought their way out of the first quarter to only trail 14-12. Petersburg peppered East Fairmont, 19-7, in the second quarter to take a 10-point lead into halftime.

Staying ahead once more with a 16-11 third stanza performance, the Vikes began the fourth quarter on top at 47-32.

Bartholow finished with 5 treys after catching fire in the fourth stanza, and senior Jayden Lindsey also finished with a game-high 20 points for the Bees.

Hayley Ours, a Petersburg senior, paced the Lady Vikings with 19 in the scoring column. Junior Casey Watts recorded 15, and senior Burgandy Roby had 8 points for the Vikes.

With little time to rest, the Vikings (7-13) are back at it today, hitting the road for Hardy County to take on Moorefield. Currently, the two Potomac Valley Conference teams have split this year, at 1-1.

“It’s a 50-50 game,” Webster said. “We win if we play well, we walk away with a loss if we don’t. They’re a pretty good team.”

Tip time at the Hive is set for approximately 6 p.m.
