Midland Mustangs finish the regular season undefeated
ELKINS — The Midland Mustangs fifth-grade basketball team recently won the Cheat Mountain Conference regular season and tournament, with a record of 19-0.
After finishing the regular season undefeated at 16-0, they capped off a three-game run in the tournament with a 42-32 victory over a tough Beverly Elementary squad in the title game on Sunday.
The Mustangs have won regular season and tournament titles in back-to-back seasons for a combined record of 33-0 over the last two years.
The team is coached by Steve Belan and Jacob D’Angelo.
“The kids have done a tremendous job again this season,” said Belan. “They have worked hard the past two seasons and they have seen that hard work pay off.
“I’m really proud of them for their efforts and their positive attitudes. They have had a lot of fun and they’ve done everything we have asked of them, both in practices and games,” he said.
“It’s a good mix of boys and girls that share the ball well and play very unselfishly. They have been a great group to coach over the last couple of seasons.”
The Mustangs will be back in action during the Superintendent’s Classic, which will take place at Elkins Middle School from Thursday through Saturday.
“The Superintendent’s Classic should be a lot of fun. It will be the toughest challenge this group has faced. We look forward to getting back on the court together for one last tournament,” added Belan.
