Hurst scores five touchdowns, leads Buckhannon

ELKINS — Mark Hurst scored five touchdowns to lead Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School to a 54-6 win over Elkins Wednesday night in the season opener for both squads.

Hurst opened the scoring with just 2:48 elapsed on the first-quarter clock when he returned a punt 61 yards. He also added the two-point conversion run.

The Little Bucs made it 16-0 on their next possession when Hurst ran in from 20 yards out. Ian Donnen hit Shawn Blandino for the conversion.

With :43 still remaining in the opening canto, Hurst found the end zone for the third time, busting loose for a 14-yard score. He also hit Robert DeBarr on the two-point attempt to make it 24-0.

B-UMS added a 43-yard scramble by hurst and a 4-yard run by Blandino before halftime to carry a 40-0 cushion into the intermission.

Hurst’s fifth score of the night came on a 35-yard run in the third quarter, while Luke Yardley added a short TD run on the final play of the third quarter to extend the visitors lead to 54-0.

The Hornets’ offense came alive in the fourth quarter behind the running of Cole Shreve.

Shreve busted loose for runs of 27 and 22 yards to set up a 17-yard score from Sam Roberts with 3:39 remaining in the game.

Shreve finished with 74 yards on the ground to lead EMS.

Elkins will remain home on Wednesday to face Barbour County for a 6:30 p.m. contest.

The Little Bucs will open their home season at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday against Mountaineer.
