ELKINS — Cole Shreve and Aziah Benson combined for 334 yards rushing and four scores as Elkins Middle School cruised to a 40-8 win over Randolph County rival Tygarts Valley Wednesday night at Wimer Field.

The Hornets, now 2-2 on the season, took a 32-0 lead into the halftime before turning to the second team on both offense and defense over the final two quarters.

Shreve and Benson did their damage in one half of action as Benson set the stage early, returning the opening kickoff 80 yards.

Benson also exploded for a 99-yard touchdown run and hauled in a 65-yard pass from Chase Workman. He finished the night with 115 yards on the ground.

Shreve led the EMS run attack with 119 yards and also scored on an 18-yard TD run, while John Bonner added a 34-yard run for a score.

Braden Judy added a two-point conversion run in the contest.

The Hornet defense also accounted for a touchdown when Brian Riley stripped a Bulldog running back and made a 59-yard return for a score.

“We had worked real hard this week fixing our offensive line after last week (a loss at Petersburg) and they did a better job of opening the holes for our running backs and giving our quarterback time to pass,” said first-year EMS coach Eddie Gannon. “They played like a good unit tonight.”

Gannon also praised the play of his defense, which recorded seveal tackles for losses on the night.

“Our defensive attack swarmed and contained them well,” Gannon said. “They played the way (our defense) was designed and had nearly a perfect night for the most part.

“Overall, it was a great team victory and now we’ll start getting ready for Tucker Valley.”

Sam Roberts led the Hornets on defense with eight stops. Derek Louk and Steven Collins also recorded several stops.

The Bulldogs (1-2) were led offensively by the running of Walker George and Derrick Gear and the passing of Luke Bright.

Elkins will travel to Tucker Valley next Wednesday for its next contest, while Tygarts Valley plays host to East Fairmont on the same evening.
