Hornets fall on the road at Petersburg

PETERSBURG — The Elkins Middle School football team dropped an 18-6 decision to Petersburg on Wednesday night.

The Hornets are now 1-2 and will return home at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Tygarts Valley.

“It was a disappointing effort for us,” said first-year EMS coach Eddie Gannon. “We didn’t tackle well or block well and when you don’t succeed in those two areas, you’re not going to win.”

Aziah Benson had 106 yards rushing and a 30-yard TD run for the Hornets. He also had an 80-yard punt return for a score called back due to a penalty.

Defensively, Sam Roberts had seven solo tackles.

Petersburg also returned an interception 95 yards for a touchdown to end a Hornet scoring opportunity.
