Philip Barbour trio qualify for state meet

ST. MARYS — Philip Barbour’s Noah Ward placed second in the Class AA-A, Region 1 meet held Thursday at St. Marys High School.

Ward, a junior, finished with a time of 16:57.70. Fairmont Senior’s Tavian Richardson won the meet in 16:46.41.

The Colts finished fifth in the team standings with 116 points, falling just short of qualifying for states.

Fairmont Senior won the meet with 34 points. Ritchie County (81) was second and Frankfort (101) third in earning state meet berths.

Philip Barbour’s Tyler Channell finished among the top 22 to earn a spot in the state meet. The senior was 16th (17:49.19) and will join teammate Ward at Cabell Midland High School on Oct. 27 for the state meet.

The Philip Barbour girls fielded an incomplete team, but had an individual state qualifier in Olivia Frye, who placed third in a time of 20:33.28

East Fairmont’s Erykah Christopher was the top individual finisher with an effort of 19:42.33.

Berkeley Springs (69) won the team title, while St. Marys was second with 74 points and East Fairmont third with 76 points.

Fairmont Senior (81) was fifth and Ritchie County (102) sixth in also earning state meet berths.

In the Class AAA, Region 1 meet at Brooke High School, the Buckhannon-Upshur boys placed sixth out of seven teams with 162 points.

University won the meet with 33 points, while Wheeling Park and Morgantown, which both finished with 61 points, qualified for states.

Larry Josh Edwards of University was the individual winner in a time of 15:42.99.

B-U’s top finisher was sophomore Julius Hobbs, who placed 28th in a time of 18:02.79.

The Lady Bucs, meanwhile, finished sixth with 167 points.

University (28), Morgantown (50) and Preston (67) qualified teams for states.

UHS’ Zoe Shetty was the top finishers with an effort of 17:51.20.

Senior Tiffany Williams was the first B-U runner to cross the finish line, placing 28th in a time of 22:51.14.
