D&E women win first game

ELKINS — The Davis & Elkins women’s basketball team won their first game of the season, defeating Salem in their home opener 83-63.

Kali Wilburn led the way for the Senators, recording a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Just three minutes into the game, the Senators had jumped to a 11-0 lead over Salem. Salem closed the gap to 12-10 with just under three minutes left in the first quarter.

However, Davis & Elkins went on a run, climbing by as much as 14 points ahead of the visitors. The Senators finished out the first half with a lead of 37-24 over Salem.

The Senators shot 40 percent in the first half. Wilburn scored 11 points in the opening 20 minutes. Wilburn also led in rebounds with seven. Sydney Nestor scored eight points in five minutes.

In the second half, D&E continued to pull away as Wilburn had nine points in the third quarter alone and the Senators shot 71 percent from the field.

There were four other Senators joining Wilburn in double digits. Nicole Armstrong, Jamiyah Johnson, Jay Kilpatrick and Sydney Nestor each scored 10 points.

Along with reaching the double digits, Armstrong had four rebounds and one assist, Johnson and Nestor both had seven rebounds, with Nestor having made two assists, and Kilpatrick made two assists.
