EMS Girls Basketball Honors World Diabetes Day

Submitted photo On Wednesday, Elkins Middle School’s girls’ basketball program celebrated World Diabetes Day in honor of their teammate, Gabi Corley. Gabi was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes on April 15, 2014, when she was in first grade. Despite her condition, Gabi, an Elkins Middle School sixth-grader, has continued to be active, playing basketball for both the Elkins Middle School Hornets and the Randolph County Flash travel basketball team and cheering for the Elkins Bengals youth football program. To honor Gabi’s continued perseverance in the face of such health struggles, her teammates surprised her by purchasing shirts to wear in celebration of World Diabetes Day. Elkins Middle School staff members also participated in the event by wearing blue to signify the blue circle of the global symbol for diabetes awareness.
