Lady ’Cats advance in NCAA tournament

D&E women open hoops season with loss at Ferris State

WEST CHESTER, Pa. — The West Virginia Wesleyan women’s soccer team knocked off No. 18 Kutztown in penalty kicks, 4-1, in first-round action of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon at Rockwell Field.

The sixth-seed Lady Bobcats advance to face No. 2-seed and host West Chester at noon on Sunday.

The game remained scoreless through regulation and the two 10-minute overtime sessions.

In the shootout, Wesleyan used goals from Natalie Pireu, Natalie Prater, Carolyn Saulle and Orian Barr to earn the victory.

The Lady Bobcats (13-1-5) used strong play from goalkeepers Chelsea Hubner and Ashlee Schumacher in the victory as they were outshot by a 19-4 count on shots and 9-3 shots on goal by the third-seed Golden Bears, who ended the season 14-4-2.

Kutztown also attempted seven corner kicks to Wesleyan’s five.

Hubner played the first half and Schumacher played the second half and overtime periods. Hubner then re-entered the match and made an impressive three saves in penalty kicks.

Women’s college basketball

Ferris State 80, D&E 55

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — Alexis Bush scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds as Ferris State handed Davis & Elkins an 80-55 setback as part of the G-MAC-Great Lakes Conference Challenge on Friday.

Adrienne Anderson added 11 points, four assists and five steals for the Bulldogs, who led 21-17 after the first quarter before outscoring the Lady Senators, 24-8, in the second canto to open up a 45-25 halftime lead.

Kali Wilburn tossed in 14 points and Nicole Armstrong added 13 for D&E.

Colleena Burdock added six points, three assists and three steals and Jamiyah Johnson came off the bench to score six points, grab a team-high nine rebounds and dish out three assists.

The Lady Senators, who will visit Michigan Tech today, were plagued by 24 turnovers and connected on 18 of 59 of their field goals for 30.5 percent.

Ferris State hit 50.8 percent of its field-goal attempts on 34 of 67 shootings from the floor for a 50.7-percent effort.
