AB men, women fall to Malone
PHILIPPI — Bryce Butler’s basket with less than a second remaining in regulation lifted Malone to a thrilling 65-63 G-MAC win over Alderson Broaddus Thursday night at Rex Pyles Arena.
The Battlers tied the game at 63-63 on David Shriver’s 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining.
The Pioneers then ran down the game clock on their ensuing possession before Butler hit the game-deciding shot.
AB took the lead six different times throughout the game, but were never able to stretch any of its leads to larger than three points.
The Battlers took their largest lead of the game, at 46-43, after a Malik Bocook jumper with 12:40 remaining in the second half .
Mike Davis led AB with 17 points, followed by Tyler Golphin with 16 points. Bocook added nine points while grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds. Shriver scored 11 points, shooting 3 of 5 from behind the arc.
AB will entertain Walsh at 4 p.m. on Saturday, while Malone visits D&E at noon.
Malone 60, AB 57
PHILIPPI –Malone rallied in the fourth quarter to knock off Alderson Broaddus, 60-57, Thursday night in G-MAC play at Rex Pyles Arena.
The Lady Battlers entered the fourth quarter up 42-41 before the Pioneers took a 52-50 lead on a pair of free throws from Robin Campbell with 3:22 remaining.
Trailing by four, at 58-54, a conventional 3-point play by Nassiah Bray brought AB to within one with three seconds left, but Malone added a pair of free throws from Campbell to secure the three-point victory.
The first half was a game of large runs, with both teams dominating one quarter each.
After the Lady Battlers started the game with six straight points, Malone went on a 23-2 run to lead 23-8 after one quarter.
AB then went on a 21-4 run of its own in the second quarter to take a 29-27 advantage heading into halftime.
Jeana Weatherspoon led AB with 12 points, as well as adding four rebounds and three assists. Bray added nine points and Madeline Moyer scored eight.
Yasmin Norman chipped in six points while snagging a team-high six rebounds.
AB will remain home at 2 p.m. Saturday to face Walsh, while Malone will visit Davis & Elkins on the same day.
