McGrew suiting up for Team USA

Former Wesleyan and B-UHS?basketball standout will compete on World Cup Qualifying Team

BUCKHANNON  — Former West Virginia Wesleyan College and Buckhannon-Upshur High School basketball standout Tanner McGrew has been named to the February 2019 USA World Cup Qualifying Team.

McGrew, who currently plays for the Salt Lake City Stars in the NBA G League, was one of 13 players announced on Tuesday by USA Basketball that will participate in the training camp.

“Never thought in a million years I would be able to represent (the) USA, but I’m beyond excited,” McGrew posted on his Twitter account on Tuesday.

After an All-American career with the Bobcats, McGrew, a 6-foot-8 forward, played overseas before signing with the NBA G League.

He was acquired by the Salt Lake City Stars from the Memphis Hustle on Jan. 21.

Team USA, which will be led by former NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy, will train Feb. 15-19 at the University of Miami and Feb. 21 and Feb. 24 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The squad will conclude FIBA World Cup Qualifying play with second-round games against Panama on Feb. 22 and Argentina on Feb. 25.

Both games will be played in Greensboro.

Other players confirmed to attend the training camp include NBA G League players Josh Adams (Raptors 905), Kyle Casey (Memphis Hustle), Chris Chiozza (Capital City Go-Go), Charles Cooke (Sioux Falls Skyforce), Michael Frazier II (Rio Grande Valley Vipers), Reggie Hearn (Stockton Kings), D.J. Hogg (Delaware Blue Coats), Xavier Munford (Wisconsin Herd), Chinanu Onuaku (Greensboro Swarm), Cameron Reynolds (Stockton Kings), Emanuel Terry (Sioux Falls Skyforce) and Travis Trice (Austin Spurs).
