Bulldogs sweep Calhoun

MT. ZION — Tygarts Valley captured a doubleheader sweep against Calhoun County Saturday in non-conference action Calhoun County High School Field.

The Bulldogs (7-9) won the opener 11-3 and completed the sweep with a 7-5 victory in the nightcap. Tygarts Valley fired out of the gates in Game 1, scoring one run in the first inning and following that up with eight more in the second inning.

Willy Walden led the Bulldogs at the plate in the opener, collecting two hits and three RBIs. Ethan Lanham and Logan George knocked in two runs apiece for Tygarts Valley, while Ethan Kirk had three hits and scored two runs. Jake Tackett and Zach Currence chipped in with two hits and one RBI each.

Riley Tackett earned the win for the Bulldogs in four innings pitched. He scattered four hits, struck out two and walked two.

Kyle Persinger suffered the loss for Red Devils (1-19) in 1 1/3 inning of work. He allowed six runs on five hits. Gage Bunner and Jordan Falls had two hits each in a losing effort.

In Game 2, Tygarts Valley rally from a 4-0 a deficit after three innings to capture the win. Kirk led the charge at the dish with two hits and two RBIs. Walden and Lanham also had run-producing hits in the victory.

Jake Tackett earned the victory in 2 2/3 innings of relief work. He allowed just two hits, struck out three and walked three. Walden was the starter and gave up two earned runs on five hits.

Jordan Yoak took the loss for Calhoun County in six innings pitched. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits. Brady Fox led the hosts at the plate with two hits and two RBIs.

“It was nice to go on the road and pick up a couple wins,” said Tygarts Valley coach James Markley. “We’re still making some young-team mistakes, but we’re getting there.”

Tygarts Valley will travel to Tucker County today, before hosting Notre Dame on Tuesday and Trinity on Wednesday. The Bulldogs will end the week with a doubleheader at home against Pendleton County on Friday.
