Morgantown garners win over Post 29

MORGANTOWN — Quintin Smith drove in a pair of runs as Morgantown Post 2 held off Elkins Post 29 for a 4-3 win Friday in opening round action of the WAJR Wooden Bat Classic at Mylan Park.

Evan Smith earned the win for Post 2 (1-0) in six innings pitched.

He scattered seven hits, struck out four and walked three.

Gavin Cottle earned the save in one inning of relief, fanning two of the three batters he faced.

Matthew Gainer suffered the loss for Post 29 (2-1) in four innings of work.

He allowed two hits, struck out five and walked eight batters.

Zach Colebank pitched two scoreless innings of two-hit baseball for Elkins.

Cory Reed had a run-producing hit for Post 29 and Remington Stanley plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

“We had a few mental mistakes tonight,” said Elkins manager Chris George. “Despite that, we still played a very good Morgantown team and had a chance to win.

“Our defense played well, we just needed to have better at-bats.”

Elkins will play two more games in the tournament today beginning with a 1 p.m. contest against Uniontown (Pa.).

Post 29 will then face Cumberland (Md.) at 4 p.m.

On Sunday, Elkins will a pair of contests against Romney Post 91 at 1 p.m. and Smithfield (Pa.) Post 278 at 7 p.m.
