Tygart Valley eliminated by Braxton County

ELKINS — Summersville and Braxton County captured victories Monday in the 9-10 year-old District 8 All-Star Tournament being held at Melvin Heckel Little League Complex at River Bend Park.

The Elkins-Summersville contest was a winner’s bracket game as both teams entered with records of 1-0.

Summersville squeaked out a 10-9 victory in the matchup and will await today’s winner between Elkins and Braxton County, which eliminated Tygart Valley with a 16-8 triumph, in Wednesday’s title game.

Elkins fell behind early and trailed 10-6 entering the sixth and final inning.

The hosts crossed three runs in the inning and had runners on second and third base when the game ended.

“We just came up a little short, but the kids showed a lot of heart in coming back the way they did,” Elkins manager Lance Marcum said. “They fought all the way until the end and we’re proud of them for that.”

Owen Stanley had two hits to lead Elkins at the plate.

Dyer Barger, Brayden Biller and Trent Stone followed with one hit each.

Stanley, Barger and Dreyton Boggs all pitched for Elkins.

Landon Hart and Breydon Godfrey had four hits each to lead Braxton County to its eight-run win over Tygart Valley.

Godfrey was also the winning pitcher for Braxton County.

Owen Bell and Bryson Taylor had three hits each for Tygart Valley.

Preston Smith had four strikeouts in three innings of action on the mound for Tygart Valley.

“I’m proud of the kids, they never gave up,” Tygart Valley manager Josh Teter said.

“This was the first time for most of our kids ever playing in a tournament like this and they had a lot of fun.”

Today’s contest between Elkins and Braxton County is scheduled for 6 p.m.
